Lead agency for early intervention services

Hawaii's Department of Health Early Intervention Section is the lead agency for early intervention services.

Eligibility criteria for early intervention services

Children under the age of 3 may be eligible if they have:

Developmental delay in one or more areas as determined by a multi-disciplinary team
Diagnosed physical or mental condition with a high probability of resulting in a developmental delay

Hawaii reported 1,846 infants and toddlers for the 2012 child count.

Support service structure

Early Intervention Section staff monitors and support a network of service providers.

Initial family contact

Hawaii Keiki Information Service System is the initial contact for families. Call 808-594-0066 for Oahu or 800-235-5477 for neighbor islands.

Services for at-risk children

Local service teams will provide information on available resources to families with children who are not eligible for early intervention services. Families may also contact Hawaii Keiki Information Service System or the parent training and information center listed below.

Family cost participation

Families are not required to pay for services. Public or private insurance may be accessed under certain conditions.

Insurance coverage for autism spectrum disorder services

Hawaii has not enacted legislation related to insurance coverage specifically for autism spectrum disorder-related services.

The Learning Disabilities Association of Hawaii is Hawaii's parent training and information center.

Early childhood school services information

Information regarding early childhood education services for children ages 3 through 5 is available from the local school, Hawaii Keiki Information Service System and the parent training and information center listed above.
