Glossary of Terms
autism spectrum disorders - categorical and global term that encompasses the various syndromes included within disability range of autism. Often used interchangeably with autism, Asperger syndrome and pervasive developmental disorders.
Department of Defense Education Activity - field activity of the Office of the Secretary of Defense with the mission to plan, direct, coordinate and manage the education programs for eligible dependents of U.S. military personnel and civilian personnel of the Department of Defense.
Early Childhood Technical Assistance Center - support center funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs.
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act - federal law that requires states to identify and serve infants and toddlers with special needs. Part C lists the specific requirements for early intervention services.
Military Interstate Children's Compact Commission - created to address education transition issues faced by military families when they are reassigned so they are afforded the same opportunities for educational success as other children.
OCONUS Directory of Special Needs - provides information about the level of special needs services available in overseas military communities.
state performance plan /annual performance report - the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act requirement for each state to evaluate its implementation of the act and provide improvement strategies. The state performance plan is based on 14 indicators for Part C. The plan is required to be posted on the state's web site. States must also annually report on progress made towards improvement, which is the annual performance report.
