Numbers of students with disabilities served

For the 2011 child count (most recent available), Louisiana reported the following:

  • Autism - 3,864 students, sixth highest among disability populations
  • Intellectual disability - 7,504 students, fourth highest among disability populations
  • Emotional/behavioral disorder - 1,870 students, seventh highest among disability populations

Support service structure

Louisiana Department of Education, Students with Disabilities monitors and supports the special education services provided by public schools. Additional support is provided by eight regional service centers.

Disability scholarship program

Louisiana's School Choice for Students With Disabilities provides tuition assistance to eligible families with children with disabilities.

TRICARE-approved applied behavior analysis providers

As of May 2013, Louisiana had 23 supervisors (direct service providers) and 70 tutors (assistants requiring supervision to provide services).

Parent training and information center

The Louisiana Parent Training and Information Center is Louisiana's statewide parent training and information center. The Pyramid Community Parent Resource Center supports families in the New Orleans metro area.
