Numbers of students with disabilities served

For the 2012 child count, West Virginia reported the following:

  • Autism - 1,619 students, sixth highest among disability populations
  • Intellectual disability - 6,934 students, third highest among disability populations
  • Emotional/behavioral disorder - 1,491 students, seventh highest among disability populations

Support service structure

West Virginia Department of Education, Office of Special Programs monitors and supports the special education services provided by public schools. Additional support is provided by parent educator resource centers.

Task forces

West Virginia does not have a disability task force.

Disability scholarship program

West Virginia does not have a statewide disability scholarship program.

Insurance coverage for autism spectrum disorder services

TRICARE-approved applied behavior analysis providers

As of May 2013, West Virginia had three supervisors (direct service providers) and four tutors (assistants requiring supervision to provide services).
