Lead agency for early intervention services

Louisiana's EarlySteps program is part of the State of Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals.

Eligibility criteria for early intervention services

Children under the age of 3 may be eligible if they have:

  • Developmental delay of at least 1.5 standard deviations in two or more developmental areas
  • Established medical condition associated with developmental delays

Louisiana reported 4013 infants and toddlers for the 2012 child count.

Support service structure

A network of 10 system point of entry offices coordinates local early intervention services.

Initial family contact

Families should contact the system point of entry office serving their location, which can be identified by calling 866-327-5978 or through the directory. Families may also contact the state EarlySteps office at 225-342-0095 or the regional coordinator serving their location.

Services for at-risk children

Local service teams will provide information on available resources to families with children who are not eligible for early intervention services. Families may also contact the parent training and information center listed below.

Family cost participation

Families are not required to pay for services. Public insurance may be accessed under certain conditions. However, Louisiana is considering moving to a family fee structure so families should contact their system point of entry office for current information.
