Lead agency for early intervention services

Oklahoma's SoonerStart is part of the Oklahoma Department of Education.

Eligibility criteria for early intervention services

Children under the age of 3 may be eligible if they have:

  • Developmental delay of 50 percent in one developmental area
  • Developmental delay of 25 percent in two or more areas
  • Physical or mental condition that has a high probability of resulting in a delay

Number of children served

Oklahoma reported 2,612 infants and toddlers for the 2012 child count.

Support service structure

A network of county-based SoonerStart providers coordinates local early intervention services.

Initial family contact

Families should contact the SoonerStart provider serving their location.

Services for at-risk children

Local service teams will provide information about available resources for families with children who are not eligible for early intervention services. The Child Guidance Program provides services to children birth to 13 years of age based on a sliding fee schedule. Families may also contact the parent training and information center listed below.

Family cost participation

Families are not required to pay for services. Public or private insurance may be accessed under certain conditions.

Insurance coverage for autism spectrum disorder services

Oklahoma has not enacted legislation related to insurance coverage specifically for autism spectrum disorder-related services.

Parent training and information center

The Oklahoma Parents Center is Oklahoma's parent training and information center.

Early childhood school services information
