Mississippi's First Steps program is located within the Mississippi Department of Health.

Eligibility criteria for early intervention services

Children under the age of 3 may be eligible if they have:

  • Developmental delay of 33 percent in one developmental area
  • Developmental delay of 25 percent in two or more areas
  • Diagnosed physical or mental condition with a high probability of resulting in developmental delay

Mississippi reported 2,122 infants and toddlers served for the 2012 child count.

Support service structure

First Steps utilizes a network of local providers grouped by district. Locations and contact information are available at district coordinators.

Initial family contact

Families may contact their county health office, call 800-451-3903 or contact their district coordinators for more information or to make a referral.

Services for at-risk children

Local service teams will provide information on available resources for families with children who are not eligible for early intervention services. Families may also contact the parent training and information center below.

Family cost participation

Families are not required to pay for services. Public or private insurance may be accessed under certain conditions.

Insurance coverage for autism spectrum disorder services

Mississippi has not enacted legislation related to insurance coverage specifically for autism spectrum disorder-related services.
