Lead agency for early intervention services

South Dakota's Birth to 3 program is part of the South Dakota Department of Education.

Eligibility criteria for early intervention services

Children under the age of 3 may be eligible if they have:

  • Developmental delay of at least a 1.5 standard deviation in one or more developmental areas
  • Physical or mental condition with a high probability of resulting in developmental delay
  • Born at 28 weeks gestation or less

Support service structure

A regional network of Birth to 3 providers coordinates local early intervention services.

Services for at-risk children

Local service teams will provide information on available resources for families with children who are not eligible for early intervention services. Families may also contact the parent training and information center listed below.

Family cost participation

Families are not required to pay for services. Public or private insurance may be accessed under certain conditions.

Insurance coverage for autism spectrum disorder services

South Dakota has not enacted legislation related to insurance coverage specifically for autism spectrum disorder-related services.
